When provided with the right conditions, the Lemon Tetra is capable of making quite the impact. With their tendency to shoal when in groups and brightly coloured bodies and fins, anyone who observes them will be in for a treat. Their body standing out against the green backdrop.

Found in the lower region of the Amazon River in Brazil in the smaller river tributaries and oxbow lakes along with flooded forest floors, they are no stranger to aquatic plants. Providing something similar to their natural environment which includes and soft sandy substrate, branches and plenty plants should encourage more colour, confidence and breeding survival rates. Their diet consists of tiny crustaceans and insects along with algae which can be provided in the form of frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia. Dry foods containing quality ingredients like Spirulina algae. Live foods can be offered as a treat.

The Lemon Tetra is an egg scattering fish which means they drop fertilised eggs onto the substrate and plants below. In a fully planted aquarium, it is possible to discover a small amount of fry emerging without any involvement but for a higher survival rate, it is best to have a secondary aquarium available when the female becomes full of eggs. A small aquarium with a mesh or large grain gravel as a substrate would offer a refuge for eggs until the female has stopped spawning. At that point, the parents should be removed.
